The first fondations of the abbey date from the Carolingian era, in the 7th century AD. It reached its peak as a Benedictine abbey in the 11th and 12th centuries. Only part of this Romanesque structure exists today ; the main parts is in the form of a square dungeon where the abbey's archives and precious objects were kept.
