Boucle vélo n° 35 - Montignac

Français

3 routes are available: Family circuit: 5.4 km (very easy). Discovery circuit: 27 km (easy). Exploration circuit: 43 km (difficult). Dominated by a dungeon, a vestige of the former Taillefer castle, the village of Montignac occupies a privileged position along the Charente valley, which you will follow as soon as you turn your wheels towards Vouharte. A stop at the Tousogne mill is a must before reaching the village of Vouharte, where you can visit the Notre Dame church and the remains of the Benedictine priory. The tour then takes you to St Amant-de-Boixe, a major centre of Romanesque architecture in the Charente, where a stop is made to visit the abbey. Founded in the 11th century by the Count of Angoulême on the tomb of the hermit Amant (who lived in the Boixe forest), this former Benedictine abbey is one of the best-preserved medieval monastic complexes in the region: see the abbey church, listed as a historic monument, and its crypt decorated with 14th century paintings, as well as the Romanesque Architecture Space where you can plunge into the heart of the monks' life through a fun and interactive tour. Note that St Amant-de-Boixe is a popular stop on the Charente route to Santiago de Compostela.
