A Romanesque Cathedral !
Angouleme has the distinction of having a Romanesque Cathedral, not a Gothic one like many other cities in France. The carved facade is the masterpiece of the Cathedral. Several themes are represented: Evangelization, the Ascension of Christ and the Doomsday. To the right of the portal, you will see a hunting scene and a carved frieze depicting a cavalry battle inspired by the Song of Roland. Paul Abadie's son who was also an architect undertook an extensive campaign of restoration in the 19th century.
Since 2000, the works of smartening up and restoration has been continuing.
