Along the eastern coastline of the island of Oleron lies the amazing Saumonards forest, which runs along the coastline overlooking the island of Aix and the remarkable Fort Boyard. The Saumonards forest stretches along the coastline on the eastern side of the island of Oléron, between the towns of Foulerot, Saint Georges d'Oléron and Boyardville. This remarkable dune and woodland area covers nearly 700 hectares. It is the result of a large reforestation campaign undertaken in the 19th century, which aimed to stop the advance of the dunes, which were gradually invading the villages. In a preserved environment, the forest still shelters the remains of an ancient fort and sandy military structures. Composed essentially of maritime pines and holm oaks, the Saumonards forest offers a multitude of marked paths that can be walked, cycled or ridden, almost all of which lead to the ocean and its beaches, from which you can see the island of Aix and Fort Boyard.
