On 28 June 2013 at 1.55pm, a serious fire broke out in the Town Hall building in La Rochelle. Behind its high Gothic wall topped by a belfry tower, this iconic building of the city held many souvenirs, including those relating to the Siege, the Aldermen's Hall, the Great Festival Hall and the Jean Guiton Office with its legendary marble table. Thanks to the efforts of the fire brigade and the technical teams from La Rochelle Town Hall, all the treasures it contained were saved from the flames and water. December 2019 marked the reopening of the Town Hall, now restored identically. The 15th century wall marks the place where the Mayor and the Aldermen who administered the city were based.
