The first fire tower, built by Colbert in 1685, was replaced in 1836 by the modern lighthouse. From the 17th century onwards, the traffic in the Antioch Channel was so heavy that it was necessary to mark out the coast. A first tower, 33m high, was then built in 1685, on the proposal of Colbert. Built of rubble stone, it had two fires maintained with wood. But this tower was no longer effective enough to cope with the increasing maritime traffic. The second Chassiron lighthouse, as we know it today, was therefore built in 1834 to replace it. It was put into service on 1 December 1836. Its height is 46 metres above the ground. From 1836 onwards, the Chassiron lighthouse was equipped with the latest lighting technology of the time. Before 1926, it was all white. From that date onwards, three black stripes were painted to better distinguish it from the Baleines lighthouse, located on the island of Ré. With one flash every 10 seconds, its eight light beams can be seen up to 52 kilometres in clear weather, thanks to its lantern located 43 metres above the ground and 50 metres above high tide. Since 1998, it has been automated from La Rochelle. Inside, a 224-step spiral staircase leads to a platform from which you can admire a beautiful panorama. You can see the Antioche beacon, the island of Ré, La Rochelle, and the north of the island of Oléron. The Chassiron lighthouse and its outbuildings have been listed as historical monuments since 2012. Guided tours on the rocky foreshore and to discover the fish locks (Only on reservation.
