Aigre, a commune built on a marsh. Built on the marsh, in the heart of the Aume valley, the town prospered from the 17th century with the production of hemp and linen. Its golden age came in the 19th century with its trade in brandy, and some fine residences bear witness to this. Today the Gautier Cognac house, one of the oldest in the Charente, is open to visitors. As you stroll along, you will pass from one universe to another between built heritage and marshland, where the inhabitants cultivate vegetable gardens and orchards. Take the opportunity to stop off at the Parc des charmilles, where you can discover some very beautiful tulip trees and purple beech trees. These trees were an integral part of the castle park and are witnesses to its history. The waterways (the Aume, the Couture, etc.), which are omnipresent along the route, play tricks on you, disappearing and reappearing, and you can walk along and across the rivers and streams. Enjoy the views and perspectives from the bridges. Committed to a "zero pesticide" approach, the municipality participates in the current challenge of the territory to preserve water quality. If you would like to find out more, don't hesitate to continue your walk by following the "snipe of the marshes" loop set up by the syndicate for the management of aquatic environments (SMAB).
