A great walk where you can pass under the gateway towers of the former château of Montignac-Charente, with part of the keep still standing a little further on. Take a stroll along cultivated or wooded paths and alongside streams. Departure from Place Taillefer All that remains of the Château de Montignac-Charente is the 12th-century keep and the 13th-century gate towers. Owned first by the Taillefer family and then by the La Rochefoucauld family, it remained in their possession until the French Revolution. At the end of the square, go down the rue des Écoles and cross the D15. Take rue du Javart to reach chemin des Mouillères. Walk alongside the Javart stream, rising up to admire a superb view of Saint Amant-de-Boixe and its abbey. Continue as far as the railway bridge and join a wooded path. Turn right a few metres and you'll see the Château de la Barre (private). Retrace your steps and continue along the signposted path (farm shed). The path takes you through wooded lanes and cultivated fields to the village of Nitrat. Cross the village and take Rue de La Fayette (at no. 1, the old Nitrat school). At the top of the path, turn right towards La Faye. In La Faye, the Chemin de la Fontaine leads to the fountain at the bottom of the road on the left. When you reach the D113, go under the railway bridge, the path runs alongside the railway line, take the 1st path on the right, cross the "ruisseau de Nitrat", viewpoint over the surrounding villages. Follow the wooded path to the lagoon. At the cemetery, take the Route du Javart, cross the D15 and return to Place Taillefer.
