The medieval garden at Tusson suggests what a monastic garden might have been like between the 13th and 14th centuries. At that time, the garden was an attempt to represent paradise lost, and every element of the composition is symbolic. The garden is based on 3 main medieval sources: the plan of Saint Gall, the Capitulary of Villis and the texts of Hildegard of Bingen. These sources were used to divide the garden into 3 parts: - the "jardin des simples", dedicated to medicinal plants, - the "garden of scents", made up of ornamental plants - the "orchard-cemetery", featuring gravestones and fruit trees.
