Situated in the open sea, inhabited year-round by guards and open to visitors, the Cordouan lighthouse is an architectural jewel designed for the glory of the kings of France. Categorized as a historical monument, built in the 14th century by order of the Prince Noir, Cordouan is the most beautiful and oldest lighthouse in France. In 1584, the construction was launched by Michel de Montaigne, mayor of Bordeaux, under the direction of Louis de Foix. The works will last 27 years until 1611 and the building will be called Royal Work. At a height of 67.5 meters, it has six floors in the Renaissance style and allows visitors to admire the breathtaking view of the Gironde estuary, the Côte d'Arvert and the Coubre tip.
