Its suspended basket now lead pedestrians and cyclists to cross between Rochefort and Echillais. Built by Ferdinand Arnodin in 1900, the Transporter Bridge is towering 50 above the Charente. Indeed, the bridge has facilitated the crossing of the river without bothering the river navigation between the Dockyard, the port and the estuary until 1967. Its gondola suspended above the water allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross from Rochefort to Echillais. Spotted on the list of historic monuments, the Transporter Bridge of Martrou and the other seven bridges throughout the world are aiming UNESCO World Heritage sites' list. The Transporter Bridge is open from the 30th of March to the 3rd of November 2024. Discover its history at the free visitor centre (called "Maison du Transbordeur") on the bank of Echillais.
